Natural Menopause

The menopause is the natural and gradual process whereby a woman’s body moves out of childbearing years into a more liberated and relaxed way of life!

There are three phases of the menopause, the pre-menopause, the peri-menopause which is the time when most physical changes are noticed and post menopause.  The hormonal changes that affect the body produce a variety of symptoms such as hot flushes, night sweats, sleep disturbances, fatigue, aching joints, breast tenderness and loss of libido to name a few.   The psychological symptoms may include depression, poor memory, anxiety and irritability.  Some women have very mild symptoms for only a few weeks or months, whilst in others, they may be severe and last for years.

Some interesting facts – the average age of the menopause in Britain in 51 (but 45-55 is normal); heavy smokers are more likely to experience an earlier menopause; tall and fat women often experience a later menopause; poor nutrition and exceptional stress can bring on an earlier menopause, women with fibroids may have a later menopause due to high oestrogen levels and a hysterectomy can accelerate the onset of menopause by five years or so.

Reflexology may support the menopause experience physically, mentally and emotionally.  It may help a woman tune into her body’s needs, highlight imbalances and areas which need attention. It may provide a space in which to relax, receive attention and be self-focused.

A holistic approach that encourages self awareness and promotes positive ageing can help relieve both the emotional stress of the menopause and the symptoms.
